COCO NITES: Entertainment News

By BRENDA GOLDEN

What a treat last week at Fager's Island with Mary Lou and the Untouchables. This gal has a blues voice that has been attracting attention throughout the Delmarva area for the last few years and big things are coming her way.

In December she performed in the Baltimore Arena with popular comedy acts Dana Carvey and David Spade, both Saturday Night Love alumni. Mary Lou was voted Best Female Vocalist in the Maryland Musician and performed in the Blues Review and Baltimore All-Star Jam. Plus, Michael Olesker of the Baltimore Sun has written good things about her, and she has recently learned that her fans have formed a fan club they're calling "Mary Lunatics."

I think all her friends and fans indeed follow her to Ocean City because Fager's Island was packed with cheering dancers. On August 17, Mary Lou and the boys will open for Clarence Clemmons who is playing with Steve Smith and the Nakeds at the Jetty, Kent Narrows. Then on October 12, which is also the band's 4th anniversary, they will celebrate with a CD Release Party at the Dewey Loman American Legion Hall in Arbutus. The CD will be titled "Untouched" and I can't wait to hear it. Seems she's going to be getting some air time on WRNR and The Colt 104.3 and 98 Rock in Annapolis. She phoned in with the news and to tell me that Coors Light has signed them as the band's official sponsor anytime they play anywhere in Anne Arundel County. Great news for the band.

Personally, Mary Lou has had a great year, too. Belated congratulations on her marriage to Lenny Kern. The Untouchables are: Johnny Gleim, drums; Charlie Hamiltion, keyboards; Steve Sengstack, bass; Danny Lough, guitar; Alan Dahlstrom, sax; Saul Strieb, trombone/baritone sax; Brian Sanders, trumpet; and Brian Wall, sound and lights. Yes, they have a huge sound and man, are they tight! We sure hope they can find time in their busy schedule to make it back to Fager's Island in the near future.
