MARY LOU & THE UNTOUCHABLES
Untouched

(MLC Productions)

By Mark Bounds, Music Monthly Magazine

On this good time CD, Mary Lou and the boys shake and bake their way through a dozen blues 'n brass selections. Songs like "Piece Of My Heart," "Mustang Sally," "Bobby Magee," "Expressway," "Unchain My Heart," and the instrumental chestnut, "Europa," are all given delicious send-ups by a band with enough chops to make a butcher jealous. And although you could call these numbers cover tunes, I'd prefer to refer to them as modern day renditions of latter day classics because they're pulled off with such aplomb.

Along with Mary Lou Magee's hearty vocal rumblings, the Untouchables deliver the goods with a great mixture of horns, keys, guitars, and percussion. Song after song, the presentation is crisp and the production is clear. Member/producer Charles Hamilton does a great job by pulling off a polished production. The group's originals are pretty effective too. "Walk the Walk" is an exercise in swing, while the funky "One Train" and the rocking "Belt It Out" sport a bastion of brass. "Fool in Love" is blues-y and balls-y, and the same can be said for "Belt It Out." The ballad, "Hold Me," is an almost plagiaristic mirror image of Elton "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me," but all is forgiven when the boogie woogie roller, "Everybody Let's Rock" brings the Untouched party to an enthusiastic close.
